We are thrilled to present an evening of all things Trenchcoat, featuring multimedia work and a live performance by Trenchcoat Manifesto duo of Tom Adams and Richard Hearn at Mastroianni Arts for the next Tremont Artwalk, September 10 from 6-10.

Poet Tom Adams and multi-media artist/musician Richard Hearn combine spoken word and audio samples (both found and manufactured) with original music and multi-media art for spinning tales culled from just-beneath-the-surface of everyday life and the abstract and sometimes bizarre depths of the human condition.

Poet Tom Adams began developing his craft in the mid 1980’s and has performed his work at open mics and organized poetry events around the Northeast Ohio area and beyond, including Mac’s Backs, Border’s Books and Music, the Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art, the Barking Spider Tavern, Spaces Gallery, and Shakespeare & Company in Paris. Tom has published a chapbooks of his work, including Lament for The Fallen Soldier.

Musician/artist Richard Hearn has been involved in the Northeast Ohio arts and music scene since 1980, playing in local underground “alt. art” bands of note - Uzizi and Breakfast In India, and working in the visual mediums of painting, photography and mixed-media sculpture. In the late 80’s, Richard worked on more experimental audio projects, including cut-up assemblages of field recordings and an early collaboration with Tom Adams, before forming his own band, Angst Café (1989-1995) which released the EP Sad Venus. Besides performing at local clubs and regional festivals, Angst Café presented multimedia events at venues around Northeast Ohio that included performances by local poets and artists. During this period Richard also began to experiment with digital photography, at first by digitizing his 35mm film images for further treatment in PhotoShop, to working entirely in the digital realm, and later, experimenting with analog/digital video loops. Besides his work with Trenchcoat Manifesto, Richard is working on various other projects, including hARMONICAvIRGINS, and a solo project of experimental music called Music For Jardo. Richard is also developing new skills in the mediums of lamp-worked glass and jewelry fabrication.

I’m stoked to finally show this body of work from four different sessions spanning almost a decade. The “Literary Set(s)” are portrait series taken at the historic/nostalgic Literary Cafe in the Tremont neighborhood. Each session consisted of a temporary studio setup in the back room of the Literary Cafe, where patrons were invited to step up and have their photos taken at no charge and very little direction. The resulting series reveal sometimes very candid and casual portraits working as parts of a larger body of work. Each session featured different set ups and formats, including medium format on a black seamless, 4×5 positive/negative polaroid on a white seamless, curtains and stage lighting, and a red seamless on the occasion of an Oscar™ party.

The exhibit will be up for the months of June and July, with receptions on Art-Walk nights of June 11, July 9, and August 13th at Mastroianni Photography and Arts.

You and Your Camera: The Mastroianni Workshop–Condensed

Sunday, March 28, 2010

This condensed one day workshop is designed for the curious, aspiring pro, or artist with a camera interested in learning the how-to, what-for, and why’s of photography.

How does this thing work?

Before we go snapping away, we’re going to learn the nuts & bolts of making photographs.

First, we’re going to turn the dial from “P” to “M” and learn how to use the meter, understand the relationship between aperture and shutter speed, and how ISO relates to all of that.

Then we’re going to try to make sense of focal lengths, perspective, and depth of field, and how those choices can change the look and feel of your photographs.

And of course, we’re going learn how to use flash so it doesn’t suck.

Let’s make pictures

Snapshots are fine, but beautiful photographs are made, not simply taken, you have to understand how to see stuff the way your camera sees it. We will explore the aesthetics and styles of photography through shooting everyday subjects, from each other to the ground at our feet and the clouds in the sky.

What do I do with all of these images?

We’ll touch on the digital darkroom and how to make the most of your images after you’ve downloaded them. (A separate class looking at digital workflow will be available to current participants in this class.)

When and where?

The workshop will be held from noon until 3PM on Sunday March 28, 2010, at Mastroianni Photography Studio and Gallery in the Tremont neighborhood, 2688 W. 14th St, Cleveland OH 44113

What do I need?

A digital SLR (single lens reflex with interchangeable lenses); you will need to be familiar with the controls on your camera in order to adjust the aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, as different makes and models vary. (Please note: cameras vary quite a bit from model to model, please familiarize yourself with the owner’s manual and controls BEFORE coming to class.) If you have an external flash, bring it.

Cost

Cost of the workshop is $95 per person.

Space is very limited, so register early to reserve your space. Registration fee is required to hold your spot; no refunds will be made after March 14th. Register by clicking and paying below:

Closing reception Friday, March 12, 6-10.
